The Work

I've maintained Rotary Club Leicester's WordPress site since October 2025: keeping plugins up to date, running the site's event coverage, and writing for its blog.

The harder part came when I was asked to get the club's real-world Leicester events properly onto the site's calendar, not just listed, but coordinated with what was actually happening on the ground. The stock calendar didn't display or behave the way the club needed, so I wrote custom code around it rather than settle for the default: it's still the calendar running the site today.

Vista: Independent Volunteering

Separately from my Rotary maintenance work, Vista (an independent Leicester NGO supporting blind and low-vision community members) gave a presentation to Rotary's Impact group, which I'm part of. That's how I found them: I joined Vista directly as a volunteer afterwards, outside of any formal Rotary-Vista partnership.

Through Vista I helped introduce Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses (AI-powered glasses that can describe surroundings, read text aloud, and identify objects) as an everyday assistive tool, and personally trained several members on how to use them: pairing the devices, using voice commands, and building the habit of asking the glasses to describe a room, a menu, or a street ahead of them.

Impact

Watching someone use the glasses to move through a space independently for the first time is one of the more genuinely rewarding things I've done since joining Rotary. It's quiet, unglamorous work that doesn't show up in a report, but it's the part I'm proudest of. It also keeps me tightly networked into Leicester's local NGO community, which shapes how I think about building technology that has to work for people, not just for a demo.

Digital Operations

Maintained Rotary Club Leicester's WordPress site since Oct 2025 (plugins, event coverage, blogging), and wrote custom code to replace the stock events calendar with one that actually matched how the club runs its real-world Leicester events, still in production today.

Independent Volunteering

Found Vista, a Leicester accessibility NGO, through a presentation to Rotary's Impact group, then joined them directly as a volunteer, outside any formal partnership between the two organisations.

Accessibility & Assistive Tech

Trained blind users on AI-powered smart glasses, turning frontier consumer hardware into a genuine daily-life accessibility tool.
